Fresh milk and wheat are unhealthy? Complete nonsense, says nutrition expert Marten Kathan. It expounds the greatest myths and lies about our food.
When a person feels bad, he often thinks this is probably due to the food he has taken, says Martian Kathan, a Dutch health expert, in front of Deutsche Welle.
On the other hand, there are hundreds of theories about what are the most beneficial foods that protect against various diseases or allergies. Marten Kathan has researched the most common food claims and advertisements and discovers some stubborn myths:
Myth # 1: Biofuels Are More Useful Than Others
Organic farming is, for example, very beneficial to the soil. But unfortunately, biofoods are no more useful than others produced by traditional agriculture. The quantities of pesticides contained in food are generally so small that they do not play a significant role. True, organic vegetables contain less nitrate than others, but it is not very clear whether this is an advantage. At one time it was believed that nitrates became the human body in nitrites and nitrosamines that cause cancer.
Today, however, we know this is not true at all. It is even possible for nitrates to lower blood pressure, which would not be bad at all. Yet there are many other reasons why it is worth supporting organic farming. For example, farmers who grow their livestock in an environmentally-friendly way use less antibiotics than usual. Exaggeration with antibiotics leads to the emergence of resistant bacteria that are also dangerous for humans.
Myth No. 2: Eat More Raw Plant Food
Vegetables are not too rich in nutrients. However, they contain a lot of vitamin C and folic acid. Thermal treatment, for example in cooking, loses part of the vitamin C content, but this should not bother us, because vitamin C can be obtained today in a variety of ways. However, the heat treatment of vegetables has a number of advantages: it destroys some dangerous bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, which is currently causing serious problems for consumers of raw vegetables and salads in the United States.
Myth # 3: Cow’s Milk is Unhealthy, Causing Many Allergies
Milk fat is not really useful: it increases cholesterol in the blood, ie. increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. That’s why it’s good to buy milk with a lower fat content. Otherwise, milk contains valuable ingredients: vitamin B-12, iodine, potassium and zinc. Milk is also an important source of protein for vegetarians.
Between 1 and 2 percent of young children are indeed allergic to milk proteins, but with age, this problem is weakening. And milk sugar is sometimes not well tolerated by people in Africa, Asia and some southern Europeans, which, however, only manifests itself in a strong milk consumption. One disadvantage, however, is the consumption of milk: it is possible for men to increase the risk of prostate cancer, but only to a minimal extent. We have more reasons to say that milk helps prevent colorectal cancer.
Myth # 4: Avoid Filled Carbohydrates Food
Every diet affects us, whether it is based on reduced carbohydrate, fat, or simply relies on less food. When eating diets we eat less because we can not eat anything we want. And this reduces calorie intake.
For 3 billion years of human evolution, the body has learned not to lose calories. Nothing of the energy we get when eating is lost – whether we’re talking about carbohydrates, proteins or fats. It looks like a savings account in the bank: it does not matter in which bank we make the money, it’s just how big they are. Everything goes to the same account, and in our case to our belly.
Myth # 5: Wheat Products Are Harmful to Health
There are people who do not tolerate gluten and can become seriously ill with wheat protein. Such is, for example, celiac disease – a serious illness, which is very rare: it develops no more than 1 to 5 per thousand people. However, the vast majority of people have no problems with wheat products. In spite of all scientific knowledge, it is stubbornly publicized that these products cause many of our health problems.
We all have them: we experience pain, fatigue, fatigue, depression. Millions of people in the world suffer from gastrointestinal problems, and they are very much affected by the so- placebo effect. That is why wheat is often accused of causing all the evils without any evidence that it could cause ill people massively.
Myth # 6: Vitamin C Helps Against Cold – The More – The Better!
This theory has been basically checked. The result: vitamin C does not protect against colds. If a person receives a daily dose of vitamin C every day, the next cold will continue instead of 5 days – only four and a half. To achieve this effect, however, he must daily drink 1000 mg of vitamin C – which is not healthy at all.
Two extensive studies have shown that excessive intake of vitamin C can lead to the formation of kidney stones. In other words, we can not take unpalatably large doses of vitamin C.
Myth # 7: Sugar Causes Hyperactivity At Children
The theory that the so-called Children’s hyperactivity syndrome is caused by sugar, which occurred 50 years ago in the United States. But in the meantime it has been proven that this theory is not true. Later, it was claimed that not sugar but artificial colors cause the disease. But this is not well established either.
What are the real dangers?
The real dangers to our health are smoking, alcohol and overweight. The biggest problem in industrialized countries is that food is available in abundance. And overweight causes many diseases, including cancer.
